The Holy Bible and Orphans in Need

The Lord has been very specific about helping orphans in need. As a matter of fact, there are various injunctions and instructions in the Bible that have clearly defined the status of orphans as well as the dire need for helping them in whatever way we can. Especially as god fearing Christians and good and compassionate human beings.

In fact, there are so many clear-cut instructions with reference to the seminal importance of helping orphans in our society that we have no further need to consult other, more temporal resources. Let us see up close, precisely what the Holy Bible says about helping orphans in need.

1 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Matthew 6:1-4 NIV

In the above verse, the good lord is highly concerned about the fulfilling the needs of the poor. Indeed, this is precisely why we have given us so much, so that we can spend it on the meek and the helpless. However, our expenditures should not be at the cost of our innate good nature.

That is, they should not be a means of ‘boasting’ about our achievements to all and sundry, especially the poor and the orphaned who might be made to feel low because the person helping them is not doing it out of kindness but because he wants the world to see their helplessness and resultantly the full impact of his largesse and his display of ‘compassion.’

Here, this compassion is not motivated by a desire to help, but rather because the man just wants to ‘show off’ in front of his fellow peers.  Such an individual is not liked by the good Lord at all. Christen charity is first and foremost an act of mercy, not a grandiose display of wealth. The former brings us closer not only to our fellow men, but also the good Lord as well. And the latter, on the other hand does the diametrical opposite.

“But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.”

Psalm 10:14 NIV

In the above verse, it is obvious that the Almighty knows all and sees all. When he sees people in trouble he gives ‘you’ the power to make a viable difference so that you too can easily avail his mercy and are thereby able to enjoy his blessings in not just this life but also that of the hereafter. In this case, it is pertinent to note that by helping orphans we are also helping ourselves as well.

“You shall not wrong a sojourner or oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child. If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry, and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless.”

Exodus 22:21 to 24

The above verse is entirely self-explanatory since it showcases the fact that the good Lord while been merciful, is also fully capable of great wrath if anyone were to abuse the power and privileges given to him by oppressing the weak and the orphaned. For verily “the meek shall inherit the Earth”

“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also, faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”

James 2:14 to 17 ESV

Here we can see that mere words without any actions behind them are little better then idle talk at best, and outright hypocrisy at worse. For surely all the words in the word cannot remove a single pebble from a path, till we go out and remove it ourselves. Thus, the oft repeated saying “actions speak louder than words.”

“‘Cursed be anyone who perverts the justice due to the sojourner, the fatherless (orphans), and the widow.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

Deuteronomy 27:19 ESV

Here, the good Lord is personally cursing the people who appropriate the rights of the weak, the orphaned and the helpless. These people will suffer the Lord’s wrath and will face damnation not just in this world, but also the hereafter, as well.

We, at Tommy’s Team actively encourage and aid as well as help every orphans in need. We do this so that it is also equally possible for them to live their life the way all children should. And that is in a sheltered, warm, and loving environment.
