The human family is considered to be the ultimate gift from God. As a matter of fact, the family also reflects God’s love and also his glory. However, not everyone has been blessed with just such a great favor and there are many young orphans all over the world who are in dire need of immediate support.

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

James 1:27

As of this moment in time, there are more than 140 million children scattered all over the world who are just waiting to be engulfed in the arms of a loving family. In fact, every 18 seconds a child becomes an orphan by losing his or her respective parents.

Whenever one startsto really think about this huge global orphan crisis, then it is easy for anyone to completely overwhelmed with the sheer staggering numbers as well as statistics. But that certainly does not mean that we throw up our hands in despair and refuse to do anything about it. As a matter of fact, every possible effort should be made toward caring for orphans as much as possible, so that we can have a markedly positive impact on their lives.

“But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless”

Psalm 10:14

While it may not be possible for all of us to adopt the teeming millions of orphans but many, if not most of us can do at least something for their cause: Let us see how we can motivate our families so that they can also help the needy and the destitute orphansin their own small way:

o Setting Up A “Change For Children” Jar In Your Living Room

You can start collecting spare change for orphans who need help. You can use a transparent jar for this purpose and you can make sure that it is well filled by placing it in the living room where not only you and your family, but also the visitors will be able to see it, the moment they enter your abode.

This will also help install in your children the importance of giving to charitable causes. As the jar will slowly become full, you and yours will understand the true meaning of the expression “Charity begins at home

o Sponsor An Orphan Child

You should make a commitment as a whole family to become a sponsor for any charity working with orphaned children in the more under privileged areas of the world. many, if not most such organizations and are non-profit entities that exist solely to ameliorate the suffering of the poor and the orphaned in society. As a sponsor, your monthly (or even weekly) donation will also help bring far more waiting children into the loving embrace of a family that really cares for them through various ‘adoption aid’ grants and programs. Apart from that, you can also help provide various types of important lifesaving medical care and equipment to orphans who suffer from acute medical and special needs and have no access to quality Medicare. Such sponsorships can easily help restore the lost hope of many orphans who have been living a hopeless existence for far too long.

o Advocacy And Sensitization

While helping them out in time of need is all well and good, but you are only one family, just imagine the impact if you were to involve your friends and neighbors towards this most noble of causes? You can easily do this by sensitizing society with regard to the plight of its most vulnerable sections. You can hold an informal garage sale where you will be able to not just raise money, but also tell the people why you are holding the sale and howdesperately the poor need not just your, but ‘their’ help as well.  Alternatively, you can also plan a neighborhood block party in a bid to raise awareness for this extremely important issue. Just put on your thinking caps and think outside the box to come up with ever more creative and innovative projects that you can put into action with the help of your spouse, your children as well as the other members of your extended family.

o Donate A Birthday

Perhaps, one of the best ways of teaching your kids the benefits of charity is to get them to ‘donate a birthday’. In other words, instead of asking their friends to come bearing presents you can ask your kids to tell them to bring stuff they want to donate towards the welfare of orphans. It need not be cash alone, but also items that they do not require anymore. In fact, you can take this concept further by creating an online fund and asking their friends to donate for the cause.

The event can be popularized on social media where you can make a Facebook page and even get near total strangers to get swept up in the excitement and make contributions to the cause.

The above ideas can go a long way in teaching your young ones the true meaning of charity and also installing in them the virtues of selflessness and kindness. While simultaneously insuring that they will take care of the less fortunate members of society, as they would their own family members.

We, at Tommy’s Team encourage and help orphans in need so that they too acquire an education. We also actively work to make the community around us a better place to live in and would want and like “you” to send us “your” very own special ideas so that we can continue our mission of making this world more responsive towards orphans in need.
