This week, a Canadian start-up Opener revealed its new vehicle, called BlackFly. BlackFly is a one person all-electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) personal aerial vehicle which, according to the release, shouldn't require a pilot's license because of a simple joystick operation though operators will require training.
BlackFly is powered by "eight propulsion systems, spread across two wings," which will provide redundancy in the case of failure. It can be charged in 30 minutes and has an automatic-return-to home feature.
Opener hasn't said anything about the cost of BlackFly but the company wants to keep this personal aircraft affordable. Marcus Leng, CEO of Opener, said: "We will offer competitive pricing in an endeavor to democratize three-dimensional personal transportation."
The company claims BlackFly will be energy efficient, relatively quiet and is even amphibious, which apparently means it can take-off and land on fresh water.
There are some limitations, however. Its range is limited to 25 miles and speed to 62 mph in the U.S. Flying requires good weather with dry conditions, temperatures above freezing and minimal winds for take-off and landing. Its classification as an ultralight vehicle also means it can't fly at night or over urban areas in the U.S.
Despite those hurdles, Leng told CBS News he hopes BlackFly will be on sale as soon as next year for the price of an SUV.
While Opener is abuzz right now we also know that Uber, Airbus, Volvo, Toyota and other companies are also frantically working on VTOL. It remains to be seen which ones will emerge as the winners.

Well the story of Tommy’s Team™ begins this way. I was raised by a single parent, a widower as I lost my father at a young age. I am myself divorced and also became a single parent. I am also a senior and a grandparent. I did not have a particular hard life but I had many challenges and I had to work very hard to achieve a certain amount of success. Because of my situation I knew what it meant to not have certain things and that I was missing out fromnot being part of a complete family unit. There are many people in this world with similar situations.
Throughout my life I have always tried to help people in any way I can and I think we all feel better if we can help others. We all want Peace, Joy and Happiness. This can beachieved in many different ways, such as being part of a solid family unit, having success in life and work, great friends or just being satisfied.
Tommy’s Team™ was created on the basis that we all need a little help sometimes, no matter what our situation is. Some people may need more than others and we go by the concept of People Helping People. Tommy’s Team is for everyone and no one is excluded.
