Ok…..  For whatever reason you are a single parent family (divorced or widowed) who helps us pay the rent? When our income drops down to nothing how does a single parental family survive with maintaining housing and utility costs? Who can we turn too? Where do we go? What are our options? Where do we find affordable housing to take care of our single family household?

Options for Rental Assistance:

The two major Programs available to help would stem from our government and charity organizations.

Government Rental Assistance Program:

Section 8 Public Assistance Program was established in order to help provide decent habitable housing for a single parent and their children. The amount of the voucher is based on family size. Vouchers are moneys made available from our government and paid directly to the landlord not the tenant. These vouchers are for the total financial satisfaction of the monthly rental costs. In most cases the tenant will pay utility costs.

There is an inspection of the premises which is then approved or rejected by the government agent. All repairs are the sole responsibility of the landlord not the tenant. There will also be a short term renewable yearly lease.

Charity Programs:

• Catholic Charities help families’ find suitable housing. They also help avoid homelessness for a single parent family about to be evicted for nonpayment of rent. No, you don’t have to be Catholic to take advantages of their services.

 • Salvation Army besides providing disaster relief also provides financial assistance based on low income eligibility.

There are Many Other Private and Local Church Assistance Programs

YES, YOU CAN reach out for government and charity organizations. They are wonderful to assist. You must meet on their restrictions of rules and regulations which sometimes we just don’t fit and are excluded from the benefits. Remember there is an investment of your limited precious time. Results will be based on their timing of availability of the type of shelter arrangement and according to their rules and on their terms.

Please don’t misunderstand these various organizations and other programs are necessary and very important for the benefits they do provide.

Their talents are many and all of the personal are greatly appreciated. We should all be grateful and appreciate all they do for some many people near and far. Again, It is all good and each one is very important in assisting in their own way.
